The Truth

Bill

Sadly, many personal care products on the market today contain toxic ingredients. This often comes down to cost-effectiveness and a lack of stringent regulations.

Many companies prioritize cheaper, potentially harmful ingredients to maximize profit margins. Synthetic chemicals and other harmful substances are often less expensive to produce than natural alternatives.

At the end of the day, profit often takes precedence over ingredient safety.

Law
The self-care industry is largely self-regulated, with limited requirements for pre-market safety testing or full disclosure of ingredients. While the FDA oversees cosmetics, it does not require mandatory pre-market safety testing or complete ingredient transparency. This regulatory gap allows some companies to use potentially harmful substances without penalty. Additionally, certain ingredients are protected as trade secrets, further obscuring their potential risks from consumers.
Toxicology
Over the past 50 years, the use of synthetic chemicals in consumer products has increased dramatically—so much so that nearly every item we use today contains some form of synthetic compound. Many of these chemicals are known to be toxic, and repeated exposure has been linked to a range of health concerns. Studies have associated synthetic ingredients with chronic conditions such as cancer, respiratory issues, neurological disorders, and hormonal (endocrine) disruption, raising serious concerns about long-term safety.

The Lie

Many self-care products boast about added vitamins, superfoods, and all kinds of attention-grabbing ingredients. But in reality, these products often contain only trace amounts of the beneficial elements they advertise. At the same time, they’re loaded with toxic ingredients that are known to cause harm.
Geometric Perspective Tunnel
It’s all an illusion—and price doesn’t equal quality. Many low-cost products contain the same active ingredients as expensive, high-end brands. In fact, some companies simply buy cheap, mass-produced products, repackage them, and sell them at inflated prices. Just because something comes in a fancy bottle doesn’t guarantee it’s effective or safe.
Many Lies
Every self-care product claims to offer some benefit—but do they all deliver? The answer is no. Most conventional products actually damage the skin’s protective barrier, leading to irritation, inflammation, and even long-term harm. How can a product truly be “good for you” if it contains known toxins linked to chronic illness, reproductive issues, and cancer?

Know

The Problem

Image by Frames For Your Heart
Misleading labels, billion-dollar marketing campaigns, and legal loopholes make it difficult for consumers to make informed choices. Many companies engage in a tactic called “greenwashing”—the practice of making misleading or unverified claims to appear environmentally friendly, clean, or safe. These false impressions often involve exaggerated product effectiveness, vague ingredient claims, or unsupported promises of sustainability, with little to no evidence provided.

The industry operates like a “mafia monopoly.” A handful of powerful multinational corporations dominate the market, quietly buying out smaller competitors. After the acquisition, they often alter product formulas to cut costs and boost profits—while still using the original branding to keep loyal customers unaware of the change. Though not a legal monopoly, these dominant players control massive portions of the industry and heavily influence pricing, regulation, and consumer perception.

Many consumers are unaware of just how common harmful chemicals are in everyday self-care products. Even with some labeling requirements in place, ingredient lists are often confusing and full of scientific names that are difficult to interpret. This lack of clarity makes it challenging to assess health risks. In a world driven by corporate greed, misleading advertising, and regulatory loopholes, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to know who—and what—you can truly trust.

The Solution

Team Talk
First, we must educate consumers and raise awareness. Knowledge is power, and we’re stronger when we stand together. If you discover a harmful ingredient in a product you're using, stop using it immediately—and share what you’ve learned. When we support one another and spread the truth, we empower real change in the world.

Each formula is jam-packed with raw, organic elements that truly protect and nourish your skin with every use. Have no fear—Sun Chicka is here, and we’re only just getting started.

Write Up
Don’t be fooled by clever marketing or flashy packaging. These big corporations know how to distract consumers with vague promises and buzzwords. Always read the ingredient list and label fine print. If a brand isn't transparent about what’s inside their product—or worse, if they knowingly use toxic ingredients—they should be called out and boycotted.

Sad Facts

Skin cancer rates are steadily rising, and 1 in 5 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70.

Studies estimate that 85% of all personal care products contain one or more toxic ingredients.

Some ingredients commonly found in skincare products are also used in industrial applications, such as brake fluid and engine degreasers.

An estimated
500,000 animals are killed each year specifically for cosmetic testing and research purposes.

Skin cancer is now the most common cancer in the U.S. — and rates have skyrocketed over the past few decades. Despite increased sunscreen use, melanoma cases have tripled since the 1970s. Experts suspect a mix of factors: overexposure to UV rays, misleading sunscreen ingredients, and toxic chemicals that may do more harm than good. Shockingly, many sunscreens block sunburn but not the deep UV rays that cause cancer. The result? A hidden epidemic fueled by false security — and it’s hitting younger people more than ever before.

The global skincare market is experiencing an unprecedented surge, projected to escalate from $142.17 billion in 2024 to $151.3 billion in 2025, marking a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.4% . By 2032, it's expected to reach $194.05 billion, driven by factors such as personalized skincare solutions, sustainability, and the rise of male grooming products

While corporate profits have hit record highs, workers' wages have barely budged — or even declined when adjusted for inflation. CEOs now make over 300 times more than the average employee, and many companies are funneling billions into stock buybacks instead of fair wages or benefits. Meanwhile, everyday workers are struggling with rising costs, housing insecurity, and stagnant pay. The gap between the ultra-rich and everyone else isn’t just growing — it’s exploding, creating a rigged economy where profits soar and paychecks shrink.

Common Toxins

Homosalate

a common sunscreen chemical, may do more harm than good. It's been linked to hormone disruption, potentially affecting estrogen, androgen, and progesterone levels. Studies suggest it may contribute to fertility issues and even accelerate skin absorption of other toxic chemicals. Alarmingly, it accumulates in the body faster than we can eliminate it — and the FDA has flagged it as not proven safe. Despite this, it’s still used in many over-the-counter sunscreens, putting unsuspecting users at risk daily

Octinoxate

a widely used sunscreen ingredient, may be silently wreaking havoc on your health. It’s a known endocrine disruptor that can mimic hormones and interfere with thyroid function, potentially leading to developmental and reproductive issues. Even worse, it’s quickly absorbed into the bloodstream and has been detected in breast milk. Studies also link it to allergic reactions, skin irritation, and environmental damage—especially coral reef bleaching. Despite these risks, it remains legal in many products, exposing millions to its toxic effects every day.

Titanium dioxide

found in sunscreens, makeup, and even food, may seem harmless—but it carries serious risks. When inhaled (like in powders or sprays), it’s classified by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) as a possible human carcinogen. In nanoparticle form, it can penetrate the skin and potentially damage DNA, leading to oxidative stress and inflammation. Studies suggest long-term exposure may contribute to respiratory issues, organ damage, and even cancer risk. Despite its widespread use, its safety—especially in nano form—remains highly controversial.

Oxybenzone

is one of the most dangerous chemicals hiding in your sunscreen. It’s a potent endocrine disruptor linked to hormone imbalances, early puberty, reduced sperm count, and even breast cancer. It’s absorbed through the skin and detected in blood, urine, and breast milk — sometimes lingering for weeks. Worse, it can trigger allergic reactions, damage skin cells, and make your body more vulnerable to toxins. It’s also deadly to coral reefs, leading Hawaii and other regions to ban it. Still, it remains in many popular sunscreens used every day.

Dibutyl & Diethylhexyl Phthalates

(DBP & DEHP) are toxic plasticizers commonly found in perfumes, nail polish, and plastics — and they’re wreaking havoc on human health. These chemicals are powerful endocrine disruptors linked to infertility, birth defects, hormone imbalances, obesity, asthma, and even cancer. Exposure during pregnancy can cause irreversible damage to a baby’s developing brain and reproductive system. Worse, they often hide under vague ingredient names like “fragrance,” making them nearly impossible to detect. You're being exposed — and you may not even know it.

Formaldehyde

a known human carcinogen, is hiding in hair treatments, nail products, and even baby shampoos. It can release toxic fumes that cause burning eyes, skin rashes, breathing problems, and long-term damage to your lungs. Chronic exposure is linked to leukemia and other cancers. Even worse, some products don’t list it directly — they use “formaldehyde-releasing preservatives,” masking the danger. You could be breathing in cancer-causing chemicals without even knowing it.

found in countless beauty and personal care products, are sneaky hormone disruptors that mimic estrogen in the body — a red flag for breast cancer, reproductive harm, and fertility issues. These chemicals are quickly absorbed through the skin and have been detected in breast tissue, urine, and even newborns. Some studies link them to early puberty, hormone imbalance, and increased cancer risk. Despite growing evidence of harm, parabens are still widely used, putting your health at risk with every application.

PFAS

known as “forever chemicals,” don’t break down in the environment or your body — ever. These toxic compounds build up over time and have been linked to cancer, liver damage, thyroid disease, infertility, developmental delays in children, and immune system suppression. Found in everything from waterproof makeup to nonstick cookware and even drinking water, PFAS are silently poisoning millions. Alarming studies show nearly all Americans have detectable levels in their blood — and yet these chemicals remain largely unregulated.

Legal Loop Holes

"Fragrance Loophole"

The FDA allows companies to broadly list "fragrance" or "parfum" on ingredient labels instead of disclosing the specific chemicals that make up the scent. This loophole can hide potentially harmful or allergenic ingredients from consumers.

Non-Retail Products

Products not sold to the general public, like those found in hotels or salons, do not have to adhere to ingredient disclosure requirements. This means consumers may not know the ingredients in these products, even if they are potentially harmful.

Clever Word Play

Big companies use names & clever word play that distract consumers from the truth. Company names like All Beef trick consumers. Companies can claim their products are all beef simply because thats the company is name. Other word play commonly used is No Added. Companies buy, repack & resale products with harmful ingredients, & because they didn't add any ingredients they can claim No Added anything.

Misleading Claims

Companies can make claims that blur the line between cosmetics and drugs, potentially avoiding stricter regulations on drug products. Terms like "natural" and "clean" are not legally defined for cosmetics, allowing companies to use them deceptively.

Bad Laws

Limited FDA Enforcement Power

The FDA can only take action against a cosmetic product after it has been sold and proven harmful. Even then, the FDA may not be able to recall a product if the company is unwilling.

Lack of Pre-Market Approval

With the exception of color additives, cosmetic products and ingredients do not require FDA approval before going on the market. This means potentially harmful ingredients can be used in cosmetics without prior safety testing or approval.

"Fragrance-Free"

Even products labeled as "fragrance-free" may contain ingredients that function as fragrance but are listed under other names, such as benzyl alcohol, which can also be a preservative

Online-Only Products

The Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, which regulates ingredient disclosure, was passed before the widespread use of the internet. This means companies selling products exclusively online are not legally obligated to disclose ingredients on their websites.
